If I get around to it, eventually I’ll put up the case study of making this logo, it actually went through quite a few iterations and originally we submitted two entirely different marks to the partners.

While working on a project recently I came across a client with the need for a Facebook and Twitter status on a website so I built javascript scrapers to pull their recent info.

I can see a lot of clients wanting this functionality and I’m happy that I now have the code in my repository.

See it in action over at http://pearhead.com

Can’t wait to use it on another project and really expand on the already extremely useful functionality.

*Side note @ Twitter: They deserve a kick to the groin for sending their json objects with improper contentType headers. I don’t like seeing warnings in my debug console!

So, lately I’ve been having extra time on my hands (not sleeping much) and my current site is old/out-dated/doesn’t reflect the type of work I’m capable of, let alone design.

Also, I haven’t updated my portfolio in a long time since it’s such a hassle. So after much deliberation, I’ve decided to upgrade - everything.

Starting on a new design, going to build an application that makes it easier to update my portfolio. My only reservation is whether or not I should do it with my current hosting, or get a cloud server and develop it on the new environment.

On that topic, I’ve accumulated sites over my development experience and after penciling it out I have enough that it would benefit me financially to host my own on a slice/cloud server. Hesitant to make that leap, but it’s something that is definitely needed.

Trying to divide my time between work, social activities, brewing and bandofbrewers (which I’m trying to finish before the summer is over) wish me luck.

I haven’t been on here in forever; but it’s always been in the back of my mind. With all of the advances in my programming skills as of late I’m probably going to toss out wordpress in exchange for an MVC that I can customize.

I might end up looking for pre-built bridges into wordpress; as I love the UI they provide.

The real focus though, needs to be an update/consolidation of all of my portfolio work. The key though will be to make it easily update-able. I always have trouble finding the inspiration to work on something solely for myself because I’d rather help someone with their project or work. Lately I’ve been starting more projects than finishing them; however it’s not due to the fact that I’m dropping them… it’s much worse than that, I keep thinking of ways to make them better, and they grow exponentially.

For example: I’m currently working on a homebrewers resource/community site as a side project and I’ve got a lot of the framework in place, I just can’t seem to get to a good point to skin it.

Between side projects and work I’m at a loss for time; sad to say I feel like my laptop is becoming an appendage rather than an accessory.

Anybody looking for a framework/cms that easily allows you to enter/update portfolio pieces and wanna have a brainstorming session on the tools that are out there and what they’re missing?? I’m not going to reinvent the wheel *as much as I enjoy it* but I do want something geared towards designers with a relatively easy templating system; more than that though -> tons of functionality and customization.

Anybody need a site/business management tool/etc?? I’m always looking for new projects.

Current side projects:
Time Tracking Software (yes, I know about toggl and it’s great but I don’t wanna pay for invoicing - also I want something that auto rounds my hours; allows for maintenance work etc)
Homebrewing community site
Personal Site overhaul
Business Site overhaul
Eggshell mosaic (yes, I do still enjoy physical mediums)

Recently my domain was expiring and I had been with the same service provider for the past 2 years(DomainDirect). However, within the last year or so DomainDirect sold out and became DomainDirectHosting; a much crappier version of the once pretty decent hosting company. Naturally as the time to renew came closer I attempted to renew, like most people I believe if something already works why fix it? So I had no intentions of moving my hosting and domain from their current location and paying the $150 for a year. When I attempted to make payment though, I was met with an onslaught of poor programming and non functioning ecommerce portions of the site. I had no way of knowing if the transaction information was taken or not, it just kept cycling back through the same two pages. I thought to myself (well maybe they are waiting for another form of recognition) and in another attempt I entered my debit card # rather than my business debit card # which is what I had previously been attempting(the account was originally set up via my personal).

Nothing worked, I attempted to contact the company and find out what the heck. No response, in the meantime I was fretting about my website coming down and potentially missing important conversations/information not to mention the fact that my blog would cease to exist until the conundrum was solved.

Being a web savvy person (self proclaimed) I took it upon myself to dig out of the hole that DomainDirectHosting was putting me in by not assisting me. I checked out GoDaddy because it is a staple in the hosting world and I knew that I would never have billing issues and although the service may not be top notch, I can work around it.

Moving my services to goDaddy for a year cost me significantly less than I would have paid staying at DomainDirectHosting; I paid $60 for the transfer and renewal of my domain, sufficient hosting space, limited email capabilities and a few SQL databases.

All in all I can say that I’m not blown away by what I’m receiving, but I’m satisfied and that’s enough for now. Here is where the nightmare begins, during the transfer domaindirecthosting suddenly decided that my CC information was submitted and they put charges on both of my accounts AFTER everything was transferred away. (Still dealing with this one)

My site was down for a day or so once they transfer finally went through because I had to go in and transfer all the files, re-setup my databases and so on. The whole thing was much more cumbersome than I had hoped, but I believe I’m back and running at full steam, or more!

Just as a final thought, don’t ever use domaindirecthosting… ever.

Now for something highly inappropriate; enjoy. (Consider yourself warned beforehand)
